Mechelen is located in the south of the Belgian province of Antwerp on the river Dijle.
For a short period in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Low Lands were ruled from Mechelen, and the city fulfilled the function of administrative capital of the Netherlands (established by Margaret of Austria). This period has contributed to the extensive art collection and several remarkable buildings. The city has the second highest number of protected buildings in Flanders, including four UNESCO listings.
